Created by Lunada Biomedical, Amberen has been helping menopausal women since 2005.
This popular supplement is designed to counteract menopausal symptoms, including weight gain triggered by hormone fluctuations.
According to Amberen.com, “If you are approaching or already going through menopause and struggling with weight gain, there is no alternative to Amberen.”
Yet is Amberen really an effective weight loss supplement? I’m not so sure.

What’s In Amberen?
Amberen is primarily a menopause treatment. It contains ingredients specifically used to regulate hormones and provide relief for hot flashes, sleeplessness, and low libido.
These ingredients include:
Ammonium Succinate. Also known as amber acid, succinate acid plays a key role in the krebs cycle, an aerobic energy system used for fat and carb breakdown. The ingredient has been studied since 1971 as a potential menopause treatment.
Calcium Disuccinate. Calcium disuccinate is an easy-to-digest form of calcium. It can strengthen bones and relieve menopausal symptoms. Most experts recommend adult women take 1000 mg to 1200 mg daily to reduce osteoporosis risk.
Monosodium L-Glutamate. Glutamine is the most common amino acid found in the human body. Monosodium L-glutamate is a salt of this amino acid. It stabilizes energy levels by regulating various chemical reactions in the body.
Glycine. A basic protein building block, glycine aids in muscle growth. Experts recommend glycine as a natural treatment for mental disorders, including schizophrenia and stroke. Taking 1 to 2 grams daily protects brain cells after a stroke.
Magnesium Dissucinate Hydrate. Magnesium dissucinate hydrate is easier to absorb than ordinary magnesium. It supports a healthy cardiovascular system while promoting ATP production. Furthermore, it regulates glutamate receptors to improve memory and learning.
Tocopherol Acetate. More commonly known as vitamin E, this ingredient acts as an antioxidant. It eliminates toxins and may improve cardiovascular health.
Do These Ingredients Promote Weight Loss?
Many women are attracted to Amberen due to commercial claims it targets belly fat. Furthermore, Amberen.com states, “in a double blind, placebo controlled clinical study, women who received Amberen showed consistent and statistically significant weight loss without changes in lifestyle.”
However, these ingredients on their own do not fight fat, suppress appetite, or boost metabolism. In fact, manufacturers also make the following statement: “weight loss was not clinically evaluated by test administrators during the Amberen clinical trials.”
Hormone fluctuations triggered by menopause cause a wide variety of symptoms. By balancing these hormones, Amberen could potentially stabilize changes in weight and optimize energy levels. This can create an ideal environment for losing weight, especially when used in conjunction with a healthy diet and proper exercise.
As with any supplement, individual results will vary. If you’re not suffering from perimenopause or menopause, then I doubt Amberen will be an effective diet pill.
What About Side Effects?
Amberen contains 400 mg of vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and GRAS (generally recognized as safe) ingredients. Compared to most other dietary supplements, Amberen’s side effect risk is very low.
On the other hand, just because the risk is small doesn’t mean you won’t experience any side effects. Balancing hormones is a tricky business, as any doctor will gladly tell you. Consequently, not everyone responds to Amberen in the same way.
While many women love the relief Amberen provides, a few women report their menopause symptoms worsened as a result.
Dashfan at Amazon.com wrote, “Amberen may work for some people but the negative effects I had made me want to write this review. First, I took this supplement for two months and NOTHING happened. I did not drop a pound, my hot flashes increased and became unbearable and I got heartburn so badly I had to stop taking the pills.”
Furthermore, manufacturers give this warning: “If you’re currently taking any prescription drugs that are designed to alter your natural levels of hormones, Amberen may not be good for you, as it will attempt to restore your natural hormonal balance. Make sure to consult your doctor, especially if you are a cancer survivor or have a severe thyroid disorder.”
Additionally, some consumers are allergic to MSG. Though monosodium L-glutamate is a purer form of MSG, you’ll want to exercise caution before taking Amberen.
Is Amberen Easy to Use?
Some consumers are confused by Amberen’s usage instructions.
For example, C Bismuth at Amazon.com pointed out, “You must take 2 capsules each day, they are two different colors, but its unclear whether they are identical or different in composition.”
Manufacturers at Amberen.com give us these instructions, “Inside each of our packages is a self-assessment test. Once completed, you will determine the severity of your symptoms and choose one of the recommended dosages: Course “A” (2 capsules per day) or Course “B” (4 capsules per day).”
While helpful, this does not clarify the color system. Are users supposed to take 1 capsule of each color? Or does taking Course “A” require one color and Course “B” another?

Since Amberen has been around for a while now, it’s widely available at any number of online supplement sites and sellers.
For example, you can find Amberen at the following locations:
• Amazon.com: $43.43
• Drugstore.com: $49.99
• eBay.com: $21.49
• Buy.com: $49.99
If you want the extra assurance of a money-back guarantee, then you might want to go to Amberen.com.
There are two packages available. The first is a 30-day supply selling for $49.99, and the second is a 90-day supply selling for $99.98. When you buy the second package, you also receive a weight loss guide, a diet menu, and a professional consultation for free.
Keep in mind only the second package is backed with the 30-day guarantee. The guarantee does not cover the cost of shipping and handling. Additionally, manufacturers recommend using the product for 90 days to receive full benefits – so the guarantee isn’t as amazing as it seems.
Are the Manufacturers Trustworthy?
A diet pill doesn’t stick around for long if the manufacturers are dishonest. Eventually the word gets out about false credit card charges, and dieters stop buying the product.
However, Amberen is different.
Amberen is a product of Lunada Biomedical, one of the most reliable, trustworthy manufacturers in the industry.
According to the Better Business Bureau, Lunada Biomedical received an A- score on an A to F rating scale. The only factor lowering the score is the “length of time the business has been operating.” I wouldn’t be surprised if Lunada receives full marks in the next few years.
Although Lunada did make a few exaggerated claims about Amberen’s performance, the company responded quickly to the NAD’s (National Advertising Division) request to remove these claims from their website.
Is Amberen a Good Choice?
Amberen is backed with a history of satisfied consumers and a reliable company. The ingredients are safe and clinically proven to work. Combine these factors with a low price, and you have the makings of a good dietary supplement.
However, if weight loss is your goal, then you may want to look elsewhere. Amberen is a menopause treatment, not a fat burner. If your weight gain is a result of hormone fluctuations, then it may be able to provide some minor results. But, if you’re simply trying to shed those last few pounds, look for a diet pill designed specifically for this purpose.
